Hunter Valley is one of Australia’s outstanding wine regions. It is located in the state of New South Wales; the region itself has been an important part in the historic timeline of Australian wine and was one of the first to grow wines in the early 19th Century. Because of its proximity to the bustling roads of Sydney the valley became known and it has been fuelled by trade links in the city.
When driving through the scenic view of Hunter Valley you’ll notice the rows of grapevines which also contribute to make the surroundings even more appealing in the eyes.
The valley has the widest planted variety of grapes; these are Chardonnay, Semillon and Verdelho among the white grape variety and Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot among the red grape variety.
Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the valley. It is identifiable with its rich oaky flavor. The grapevine has the ability to adapt and to germinate; even on soil high in clay, saline and chalk.
Semillon is the most iconic wine of the valley. It was planted in the region way back in 1830. Due to the soil and climate in the valley it pulls off the proper ripening of the grapes which have a low sugar and high acids.
Verdelho is considered as a useful grape variety, initially for fortified wines, and sweet wines and more recently for dry table wines. Verdelho has a crisp aromatic smell, containing spicy and leafy
undertones.
Shiraz is the valley’s classic red grape variety. This grapevine grows in all wine regions in Australia but Shiraz of Hunter Valley is unique. It is recognizable by its gamy flavor, that when you keep it for a long time its texture will be silky and has earthy undertones.
Cabernet Sauvignon, this grape variety has a great advantage as it can adapt itself to any type of land. Usually the climate affects the color as well as their taste, when the weather is cold the grapes will darken, and when the climate is warmer the grapes are reddish and have a higher
acidity.
Merlot, the most popular of the red grape varieties, has a dark blue color. The best time to pick the fruit is when it’s soft and fleshy. Good quality merlot wines have lovely aromas of black cherry.
